Gabriele Jutz’s first monograph, Geschichte im Kino. Eine Semiohistorie des französischen Films: Rohmer, Resnais, Godard, Allio (Münster: Nodus, 1991) was based on her PhD research on film and historiography. After completing this work, she began exploring experimental cinema. She is co-editor, with Peter Tscherkassky, of Peter Kubelka (Vienna: PVS, 1995). Her book Cinéma brut. Eine alternative Genealogie der Filmavantgarde (Vienna, New York: Springer, 2010) discusses cameraless experimental film practices. From 2016 to 2019, she was a key member of the research project RESET THE APPARATUS! A Survey of the Photographic and the Filmic in Contemporary Art, which focused on “obsolete” media and technologies in contemporary art practices. She is the co-editor of the eponymous book (Berlin and Boston: Walter de Gruyter, 2019), alongside Edgar Lissel and Nina Jukić. The same year, she published Animating Truth(s). The Films of Maria Lassnig and Their Context (Vienna: University of Applied Arts Vienna, 2019).
